Mary (Irene) Walter, 90, Lanesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Harrison Springs Health Campus in Corydon.
Born June 22, 1926, in English, she was the daughter of the late William (Bill) and Bessie Raleigh O’Daniel.
She was the former owner and operator of Gurtz’s Grocery in Mauckport and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lanesville, where she was a member of the St. Anne’s Altar Society and the quilter’s group.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Jean Maddox; a son, Keith Gurtz; and four brothers, Harlan, William, Roy and an infant.
Survivors include her husband, Jude Walter; four sons, Elmer Gurtz (Elizabeth) of Corydon, Steven Gurtz of New Albany, Terry Gurtz of Lanesville and Gary Walter (Eugenia) of Charlestown; four daughters, Sandy Hess (Chuck) and Theresa Kissel (Mike), both of Corydon, Judy Zipp of Indianapolis and Barbara Schindler (Donnie) of Saguache, Colo.; two sisters, Christine Saunders of Corydon and Marjorie Garmon of Bartow, Fla.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 6, from noon to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 3, and Saturday, Jan. 7, after 9 a.m. at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.
Funeral Mass: Saturday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Lanesville.
Officiant: Father Robert St. Martin.
Pallbearers: Shane Jenkins, Eric and Clayton Hess, Ryan Johnson and John and Joe Kissel.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
