NH girls edge out rival in pool

The North Harrison girls’ swim team took the top spot at the North Harrison Invitational Saturday at the YMCA of Harrison County in Corydon.
Utilizing its depth, the Lady Cats held off rival Corydon Central with a final tally of 330-321. On the boys’ side of the co-ed event, Tell City was the overall winner with 363 points followed by North Harrison (236) and Corydon Central (235).
Corydon Central was able to win seven of the 11 events in the girls’ competition, led by Gracie Saulman, a former state qualifier.
Saulman individually won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.72 and turned around to take the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.28. Filling in the points behind Saulman’s finishes were North Harrison swimmers. Hannah Ingle and Natalie Robertson took third and fourth place, respectively, in the fly while Robertson and Alaina Sears were second and third, respectively.
Team-wise, Corydon Central and North Harrison went one-two in the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays. Corydon Central’s team of Melissa King, Brianna Harper, Erica Wood and Saulman teamed to take the medley in 2:08.10. The same group took the 200 free in 5:35.12. Similarly, North Harrison sent out the same foursome ‘ Rachel Purser, Shannia Austin, Ingle and Robertson ‘ who were runners-up in the medley and 200-free relays.
Corydon Central’s Harper won the sprint event, taking the 50 freestyle in 29.02 seconds. Teammate Abbie Bratcher was third. In the 200 individual medley, Corydon Central’s Melissa King was first in 2:36.84. North Harrison swimmers Austin and Purser were third and fourth, respectively.
Melissa King and Zoe Pierce were among the top distance swimmers. King won the 500 free in 6:29.82, while Pierce placed third.
Other notable girls’ finishers included Corydon Central’s Erica Wood (second, 100 freestyle and third, 200 freestyle), Harper (third, 100 freestyle) along with North Harrison’s Alexis Blessinger (second, 100 backstroke). Lanesville’s Haley Leffler had Lanesville’s best girls’ finish with an eighth in the 200 free.
Corydon Central and North Harrison were unable to keep up with Tell City in the team-scoring column on the boys’ side. The Harrison County rivals, however, had one point between them in the end.
Corydon Central’s team of Brian Wood, Jaydn Swords, Max Glordan and Ben Glordan won the first event, the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:56.54. About two seconds behind them were North Harrison’s Jordan Johnson, Abe Tillquist, Dylan Shaffer and Zach Outcalt.
Johnson went on to have a solid meet for North Harrison, coming back in the second race to win the 200 free (2:19.67). He also placed third in the 100 free, an event won by Corydon Central’s Swords (58.09).
As an individual, Shaffer was stellar as well. He won the 100 butterfly, going away in 58.46 seconds, then swam to an comfortable victory in the 500 freestyle (5:35.12).
Corydon Central’s Max Glordan was runner-up to Shaffer in the fly but had a win of his own in the backstroke. In the 100-yard event, Glordan swam backward in 1:05.55.
The 100 freestyle saw Swords come across first for the Panthers in 58.09 seconds. Third place went to North Harrison’s Jordan Johnson, while Lanesville’s Lucas Hayse was seventh. Swords wasn’t finished winning, later taking the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.29.
South Central’s Kenny Deatrick logged a top spot for the Rebels. He took the 50 freestyle (24.84) followed by North Harrison’s Zach Outcalt and Corydon Central’s Ben Glordan.
In the 200-free relay, Corydon Central sent out Max and Ben Glordan along with Swords and Wood to victory in 1:44.43. North Harrison’s foursome of Matt Jones, Outcalt, Johnson and Shaffer were second.
