Edward H. Hoffman


Edward H. Hoffman, 97, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016.
Born Dec. 30, 1918, at Milltown, he was the son of the late Peter D. and Mary Simon Hoffman.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, retired from Ford Motor Co. and a member of Hobart Beach VFW Post No. 1693, Milltown American Legion Post No. 332 and Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Dorothy Totten; a son, Edward H. Hoffman Jr.; a grandson, Ronald James Hoffman Jr.; nine siblings, Raymond, John J. and Fred Hoffman, Ruth Atkins, Sophia and Mary Walsh, Agnes Byrum, Catherine Colin and Lorene Roberts; and a stepdaughter, Janet Cosby Menefee.
Survivors include his wife, the former Betty M. Hoten Pirtle; a son, Ronald J. Hoffman (Joaquina) of Fox Creek, Alberta, Canada; four stepdaughters, Karen Mahoney (Monty) of Madison, Connie Gettelfinger (David) of Panama City Beach, Fla., June Solley (Beau) of Pendleton, Ky., and Leanna Heintz (Tony) of Palmyra; three stepsons, Kenneth Pirtle (Kathy) of Dale, Marvin Pirtle of New Salisbury and Rolla Pirtle of Corydon; 21 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Monday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 9, after 9 a.m. at Swarens Funeral Home in Ramsey.
Funeral: Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church along S.R. 66 south of Marengo with burial in Old St. Joseph Cemetery at Milltown.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany or Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
