Coming around the fourth corner and down the front stretch, leaders of the 3,200-meter run at the girls’ Mid-Southern Conference meet were pulled off the track for safety reasons. A quick-approaching storm prompted league organizers to halt action last Wednesday (already delayed one day due to weather) at Eastern (Pekin) and finish with the boys’ meet at Corydon Central.
When the meet concluded Friday at Corydon Central, Silver Creek hoisted the MSC trophy, scoring 147 points. Corydon Central, backed by individual wins by Ashley Oliver and Keeley Martin, placed second with 97-1/2 points. North Harrison had one winner ‘ Emma Book ‘ and took third (86) as a squad.
Oliver made good on her two field events, taking first in the discus and shot put.
At the discus, Oliver battled a pair of Brownstown Central throwers, but her distance of 105 feet, 11 inches was good enough to defend her sectional title in the event. North Harrison’s Lilly Hatton (97-7) and Victoria Perez (96-11) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Shot put was suspended Wednesday and closed on Friday. Oliver’s best shot of 35-4-1/2 was nearly four feet better than runner-up Jenna Daniel of Charlestown. Hatton placed fifth (30-7-1/2).
In field events, Emma Book claimed yet another MSC title in the pole vault. She vaulted over 8-0 for top honors. Corydon Central’s Madeline Zink stayed in the contest with Book the longest, taking second by going over 7-10.
North Harrison also picked up key field points with Emily Nealy (second, high jump, 4-10) and Abby Logsdon (third, long jump, 14-5).
Martin tangled with Silver Creek’s Emory Lewis on the track within the sprints.
Three finishers in the 100-meter dash finished within 0.07 of a second from one another. The first to the line, however, was Martin, covering the 100 in 13.50 seconds. Logsdon placed fifth (14.43).
Dueling again in the 200, Lewis opened an early lead and barely held on when Martin came with a powerful late kick. Lewis ran in 28 seconds, while Martin stopped the timer at 28.08. North Harrison’s Lexi Seitz ran fifth (29.63) in the 200.
When competition was halted at Eastern on Wednesday, Corydon Central’s Kristain Proctor was more than half way home to a victory in the 3,200 run. An announcement to clear the track-and-field facility prompted the distance event to stop and start from scratch Friday at Corydon Central.
Back on her home turf, Proctor took the runner-up spot in the 3,200 with a time of 12:52.62, finishing behind Salem’s Sandra Warren.
Proctor, on Wednesday, placed third in the 1,600 (5:49.37).
In middle distance races, Corydon Central’s Sara Bussabarger was third in the 800 (2:44.44) and North Harrison’s Abigail Purser was fifth in the one-lap 400 (1:08.23).
All three relay races went the way of the champion Lady Dragons. Corydon Central’s best finish came in the 3,200 relay, while North Harrison’s best passing of the baton was third in the 400.
Up and over the hurdles, Corydon Central’s Abi Miller was fourth in the 300 event (52.83) and fifth in the 100 race (17.76). North Harrison’s Hatton came in third tackling the 300 hurdles, crossing in 52.10 seconds.
