2 die in single-vehicle crash

A single-vehicle crash Thursday night resulted in the death of the driver and his passenger on S.R. 11 between O’Bannon Road and Morgan’s Lane near Elizabeth.
Darrick D. Heintz, 42, of Elizabeth was driving a 1995 black Ford Ranger north on S.R. 11 with passenger James V. Gibson, 44, also of Elizabeth, when, at approximately 9:59, the vehicle went off the right side of the highway and continued for a short distance, according to a crash report from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept.
‘The tire marks then entered the roadway where there were black marks on the roadway that indicates the driver over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle,’ the report said. ‘The vehicle then crossed the center line … and exited the west side of the roadway. The vehicle continued off the roadway, and the front of the vehicle collided with a tree, causing major damage to the vehicle.’
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. The report said neither man was wearing a seat belt.
A certified crash reconstructionist said speed was a factor in the crash. And, according to the report, alcoholic beverages were located inside the truck.
The deceased were transported to the Harrison County morgue, where toxicology screens were performed and results are pending.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
