Mildred D. Monroe
Mildred D. Monroe, 100, Palmyra, died Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation in Corydon.
Born Nov. 1, 1915, in Hardyville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Evie Martin Davidson.
She graduated from Memorial Consolidated School in 1935 and Campbellsville College in Kentucky and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oakland City (Ind.) College. She was a retired elementary school teacher, who taught for 30 years, starting in a one-room schoolhouse in Hart County, Ky. She later taught at Bradford and Morgan Township Elementary and retired from North Harrison Elementary School. She was a member of the local and state Retired Teachers Association and Morgan Township Homemakers and was a charter member of Palmyra Baptist Church, which she and her late husband helped start in 1956.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Willie Astor Monroe, on June 3, 1998; a daughter, Beverly Eames; and three brothers, Gordon, Carl and Charles Davidson.
Survivors include two sons, David Monroe Sr. (Arlene) of Buffalo, Ky., and Danny Monroe (Janice) of New Salisbury; a daughter, Connie Sovern of Mitchell; a niece and best friend, Shirley Edwards of Hardyville, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Alouise Davidson; 11 grandchildren, Janet Beagle, David Monroe Jr., Jim Monroe, Ty Sovern, Matt Sovern, Stephanie Land, Gretchen Bell, Courtney Bell, Julie Cordray, Erin Wise and Amy Goodpaster; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Tuesday, March 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, March 16, after 11 a.m. at Love Funeral Home in Palmyra.
Funeral: Wednesday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with interment in Palmyra Cemetery.
