Lanesville seniors close home slate with comeback win

Putting a close to the regular season, the Lanesville girls’ basketball team continued its momentum to the upcoming sectional tournament with a 53-47 win at home Thursday night.
The game marked the home finale for four Lanesville seniors: Hannah Walther, Emily Davis, Ellen Nichols and Michaela Behr.
‘Senior night was a success,’ Lanesville skipper Kevin Smith said.
It was the first home finale win in his four years as head coach of the Lady Eagles.
Walther’s last chance to fire at the home nets was a fine one in the scoring column. The guard finished the night with a game-high 25 points. Many of those came down the stretch to close out the victory.
‘Hannah played well in her final game at Lanesville,’ Smith said. ‘She iced the game with 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter.’
For the game, Walther was 10 of 12 from the stripe. The team was solid as well, going 21 for 29.
‘We finally got the message to drive the ball and get to the line against (Clarksville),’ Smith said. ‘I thought all four seniors played well in the game.’
Clarksville nailed six 3-pointers in the opening half to lead 31-24 at the break. The long balls for the Lady Generals ended the rest of the way as Lanesville charged back. Defensively, the Lady Eagles held Clarksville to four third-quarter points while putting in 13 to take the lead.
‘We just didn’t guard (the 3-pointer) well in the first half,’ Smith said. ‘We made some adjustments to our defense, and we guarded better.’
Smith said his team stayed in control of the fourth quarter to close out the win.
Carmen Jacobs scored nine points for the winners, while Davis added six on a pair of 3-pointers.
Lanesville, winner of three of its last four games, ended the regular season with a 7-15 record.
‘Overall, we are better than we started the season and were competitive in many ballgames this year,’ Smith said.
Up next for Lanesville will be the Class 1A New Washington Sectional. The Lady Eagles will open sectional play against Rock Creek Academy on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Lanesville won the regular season meeting 45-31.
