SC tops sectional foe Shawe on the road
Two teams in the Class 1A Sectional 62 field entered Saturday with records better than .500.
Those squads ‘ South Central and Shawe Memorial ‘ met Saturday afternoon in Madison. The Lady Rebels trailed at the half by nine but came out on fire in the second half to defeat the Lady Hilltoppers 61-51.
In the record column, South Central improved to 11-8 while Shawe Memorial dropped to 11-11. It was the fifth win in a row for the Lady Rebels.
‘This was a tale of two halves where, in the first half, Shawe was the more aggressive team,’ South Central coach Randall Schoen said. ‘They took it to us and got to the free-throw line, where they made 12-of-13 to our 5-for-5.’
At the half, Shawe Memorial had a 35-26 edge.
The third quarter was lopsided the way of South Central, as the Lady Rebels outscored Shawe Memorial 22-6 during the eight minutes.
Scoring for South Central was led by Alexis Knear’s 24 points and Ally Davis’ 19. Miranda Kiper tallied nine points.
‘The second half, the girls responded well out of the locker room and we were the much more aggressive team on both defense and offense, where we went 16-of-21 at the line,’ Schoen said. ‘We felt this was a very important game for us as they are a sectional opponent.’
Maddie Waller and Clarie Higgins led Shawe Memorial in scoring with 16 points apiece.
Up next for South Central is a trip to Southern Athletic Conference-rival New Washington on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Rebels will return home Wednesday (Jan. 27) to face Silver Creek.
