Opener goes way of Lady Panthers

The last time Corydon Central and Lanesville met in girls’ basketball was in January of the memorable 2004-05 Lady Panthers’ season when they reached the state final in Class 3A.
Nearly 11 years later, the Harrison County schools met in the opening game of the inaugural Battle at the First Capital, hosted by Corydon Central. Tipping off on Friday morning, Corydon Central dominated play, scoring a 53-28 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Red-hot from the outside, Corydon Central’s Megan Rowlett buried four 3-pointers leading to a game-best 16 points.
Corydon Central was able to build a comfortable lead through 2-1/2 quarters of play. Rowlett hit a long ball to give her team a 47-10 lead, Corydon Central’s largest of the game. Lanesville closed the third quarter with some momentum by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, one each by Hannah Walther and Emily Davis.
All of the first and second quarters leaned to Corydon Central. Hayley Rennirt and Ashley Oliver had two field goals each in the opening frame. Lanesville was held to one field goal ‘ by Walther ‘ in the first half.
Rennirt, who finished with 10 points, added three field goals in the paint during the second quarter. Morgan Nalley and Cami Schmitt joined the scoring parade too with makes.
Offensively, the shots started to fall for Lanesville in the final stanza. Offensive rebounds by Carmen Jacobs and Michaela Behr led to points. From the outside, Peyton Sonner put in consecutive 3-balls.
Walther went on to lead the Lady Eagles in scoring with seven points followed by six from Sonner.
For Corydon Central, Oliver contributed nine points while teammate McKendra Fisher pulled down a team-high eight boards.
With the win, the Lady Panthers advanced to face Tell City in the championship while Lanesville fell to the consolation bracket to meet Providence Cristo Rey.
