Tom L. Monroe
Thomas Lenord (Tom) Monroe, 90, Corydon, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015.
Born Oct. 20, 1924, in Lawrenceburg, Ky., he was the son of the late Lenord Goodlow Monroe and Genie Wilson Monroe.
He was a 1943 graduate of Corydon Central High School, a World War II veteran in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, serving in the Army 823rd Ordnance Base Depot Company as a T-4 sergeant with an honorable discharge in 1946, a member of Unity Chapel United Methodist Church near Ramsey, Corydon Pisgah Masonic Lodge No. 32, the Ramsey Spencer Grange and Hoosier Knobs CAR Club and a retired board of director member of Peoples Bank & Trust in Corydon. After his service in the military, he worked for Mobil Oil Co. as a local agent and distributor from 1948 to 1993 then continued that affiliation with Mobil after starting and retiring from his own company, Monroe Oil, in 1993.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Monroe Wolfe, and four brothers, Gilbert, Howard and Charles Monroe and John Hawthorne.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, the former Betty Lou Wiseman; two daughters, Dr. Lynne Monroe Wheat and Nancy Monroe Lopp; a brother, Davis Monroe; a sister, Juanita Monroe Williams; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 2, from 1 to 8 p.m., with Masonic rites at 7, at Swarens Funeral Home in Ramsey.
Funeral: Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. at Unity Chapel United Methodist Church south of Ramsey with interment in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon.
Officiant: The Rev. Joe Hornick.
Pallbearers: Gary and Rick Monroe, David Lopp, Brian Wolfe, Tommy Wiseman, Chris Ludwig and Warner Wheat.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the Harrison County Community Foundation Robin Monroe Thieneman Wolfe Memorial Scholarship Fund.
