Traveling south, North Harrison picked up a Mid-Southern Conference win in boys’ tennis last Tuesday, defeating rival Corydon Central 4-1.
Corydon Central presented some challenges, particularly in the second set of most matches, but the Cougars prevailed.
Summer was back as players battled the sun as well as their opponents.
Cleaning up on the doubles court, North Harrison landed wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Playing aggressive, the Cougars’ No. 1 team of Cameron Higdon and Eldon Engleman won with back-to-back 6-3 scores over Shaun Showalter and Max Glordan.
At the No. 2 position, Logan Foley and Zach Outcalt won the first set relatively easy, 6-1, against Tristan Kaiser and Cameron Allen. The last set was a battle. Kaiser and Allen forced the North Harrison pair to a tie-breaker. Although each team had double faults (two for Corydon Central; one for North Harrison) in the tie-beaker, Foley and Outcalt prevailed, 7-3.
Corydon Central’s lone win came at top singles. Left-handed Clayton Schreck used consistent play to defeat Ryan Dones. Schreck scored a late break in the first set to win 7-5. Carrying the momentum over, Schreck won the second, 6-3.
At No. 2 singles, Ben Davis was a winner for North Harrison, dropping Dawson Spaulding 6-1, 6-4.
Cameron Voyles made quick work of Blake Wiseman at No. 3 singles for the Cougars. Controlling the match, Voyles pulled out a 6-0, 6-0 decision.
Sectional play will get underway the week of Sept. 30 through Oct. 3. The draw will be Sept. 24.
