Crash claims lives of elderly couple

An elderly couple was killed and their daughter was injured during a single-car crash along S.R. 62 west of Leavenworth last Tuesday.
Leavenworth volunteer firefighter Duane Coomer discovered a green Buick sedan overturned off of the right side of the highway near Turkey Fork Road just before 8 p.m. on July 7. After making his way down the steep hill, he found Kimberly Weaver, 57, of Bloomington, conscious but trapped.
Weaver told the firefighter that she believed her parents ‘ Donald and Mable Weaver, 82 and 89, respectively ‘ were deceased.
The Weavers were headed east down a hill with a hairpin curve when Mable Weaver, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle. Crawford County Sheriff Charlie McDaniel said heavy rain that afternoon may have contributed to the crash.
McDaniel said Kimberly Weaver had a mobile phone but couldn’t reach it to call for help. He added that she said she talked with her father, who was in the rear seat, for a bit before he died.
After being extricated by members of the Leavenworth Volunteer Fire Dept. and Crawford County Emergency Medical Services, Kimberly Weaver was flown by Air Methods helicopter to a Louisville trauma facility with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Donald and Mable Weaver were pronounced dead at the scene by the Crawford County coroner.
All three passengers were wearing seat belts, and the vehicle’s airbags had deployed.
