Laconia woman dies in crash

A Laconia woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash last month on Old Goshen Road.
According to a crash report from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept., Mary J. Knear, 72, of Elizabeth was driving a 2006 Mercury Mariner east on Old Goshen Road, near John Conrad Road, and approached the crest of a hill on Friday, June 26. At the same time, Lori A. Shields, 44, of Laconia, was driving a 2004 Kia Sedona west on Old Goshen Road and was approaching the same hillcrest.
The crash report says that, as Shields came over the crest, her vehicle was left of center and the two vehicles crashed at about 1:20 p.m.
Shields’ car spun around and ended up facing east in the westbound lane, leaking fluid along the way. The trail of fluid shows that at the time of impact the Kia was left of center, according to the report.
The Mercury, the report says, was forced backward off the roadway, through some grass, back onto the roadway and ended up in a yard.
Both drivers, who were wearing their seat belts, said they did not remember how or what caused the crash. Shields said she remembered her husband, Joseph D. Shields, 42, was driving home and was tired so they switched and she was driving. She also remembered turning onto Old Goshen Road.
Both drivers complained of pain throughout their bodies and were transported to the hospital. Joseph Shields, who was riding in the front passenger seat and wearing a seat belt, also complained of pain throughout his body.
Bonnie A. Ferree, 87, of Laconia, a restrained front-seat passenger who had to be extricated from Knear’s vehicle, was transported to University Hospital in Louisville, where she died on July 1, according to the police report. An autopsy was requested to be performed by the Louisville Medical Examiner.
