Gary Steven Walton, 63, Milton, W.Va., died Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House.
Born Aug. 1, 1951, he was the son of the late Marvin Berdean and Elsie Alice Apple Walton.
He was a 1969 graduate of Paoli High School and served in the Navy, stationed aboard the USS Belknap home-ported in Norfolk, Va., until separated from active duty in July 1974 and honorably discharged in 1976. After his military service, he graduated from the University of Southern Indiana (formerly ISUE) in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. He was licensed in Indiana as a Real Estate broker and auctioneer and earned the professional designation as Certified Economic and Community Developer by the International Economic Development Council in 2000. He previously served as the first executive director of the Perry County Development Corp. in Tell City, the first executive director of the Washington County Economic Growth Partnership in Salem and moved to West Virginia in 1999 to accept the position as executive director of the Putnam County Development Authority in Hurricane, W.Va., where he served for more than 14 years. He accepted the position as president and CEO of the Huntington Area Development Council in April 2013 and served in that position until his death. He was a member of the Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church; a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9097 in Hurricane, W.Va., and the American Legion; was a past board member of Awareness Washington County; a past Distinguished Club Secretary of the Optimist Club of Jasper; a long-time member and former board member of the Southern Economic Development Council and the International Economic Development Council; and a board member of the Huntington Tri-State Airport Board and the Wayne County Economic Development Authority.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Lesta Walton; his first wife, Gertrude Walton; two brothers, Larry Walton and Timothy Walton; and a stepbrother, Mike Ludlow.
Survivors include two daughters, Tai Muldoon and Timmi Shawler; two sons, Chase Walton and Jonathon Hemmer; and two grandchildren.
Visitation: Saturday, May 23, from 4 to 5 p.m. at Wallace Funeral Home in Milton, W.Va.
Celebration of Life: Saturday, May 23, at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Local visitation: Sunday, May 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. at McAdams Mortuary in Paoli.
