Trailing for much of Friday afternoon’s game, the North Harrison softball team had to rally back with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to top South Central 7-3.
Visiting South Central had a 3-1 edge going into the fifth inning.
Changing up the offense after logging one hit in the first four innings, North Harrison began to move runners. A double by Jourdan McAfee to begin the bottom of the fifth, set up fake bunt swings by Kodi House and Kaylin Bright. Both successively showed bunt and swung away for singles.
Bringing in the tying run, Kyia Oppel put down a squeeze bunt with one out, bringing House across home plate.
The next batter, Aspen Luther, hit a single to right, giving the Lady Cats their first lead, 4-3.
South Central had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, looking to retake the lead. Singles by Sabra Walker and Kelsey McKinzie, along with Sydney Lewis drawing a free pass, put ducks on the pond.
With one out, North Harrison pitcher Brittany Rudolph fielded a sharp come-back hit by Katie Shoemaker. The twirler tossed home to Bright, who fired on to first to complete a key double play.
Some of the momentum carried over to the sixth for North Harrison. It happened after South Central pitcher Haley Shaffer struck out the first two batters. Five straight singles by North Harrison led to three additional runs.
McAfee, who was two for three on the day with a hit by pitch, started the string. Following suit were House, Bright, Randolph and Oppel. Hits by Bright to left and Randolph to right plated runs.
The added runs gave North Harrison a 7-3 cushion. South Central put two runners on ‘ Maddie Mellick and Shaffer ‘ in the final inning but couldn’t generate a two-out rally.
Both teams finished with 10 hits each.
The top of the order was particularly stellar for the Lady Cats. Bright went three for four at the dish, while McAfee and House had two hits each. Bright was responsible for three RBIs.
South Central had a good bit of momentum in the first several innings. Shaffer kicked off the second inning with a double to left. After an Emily Miller sacrifice bunt moved Shaffer to third, Lewis brought her home.
The 1-0 lead after two innings went to 2-0 in the third. Jordan Renn got a hold of a double to left field. She later swiped third base setting up a sac fly to deep left hit by Oakley Taylor.
North Harrison split the deficit in half in the third with an infield single by Bright. The Lady Cats, however, left the bags packed when Shaffer induced a ground out by Oppel.
Increasing its lead back to two, South Central scored one in the top of the fourth. Singles by Walker and McKinzie led to the run.
South Central held the lead until North Harrison rallied back.
Four players for South Central ‘ Renn, Mellick, Walker and McKinzie ‘ had two-hit games. Mellick reached back three times, getting to first on an error in her first at-bat.
Randolph picked up the win in the circle, striking out one. Shaffer took the loss despite 10 strikeouts.
South Central will play at Corydon Central Monday, while North Harrison’s next contest will be tomorrow (Thursday) at Silver Creek.
