Dr. Leonard C. Waite, 73, Corydon, died Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany.
Born Sept. 10, 1941, in Reynoldsville, Pa., he was the son of the late Herbert and Laura Howlett Waite.
He was past president of the Corydon Planning and Zoning Commission and vice chair of the appeals board; chairman of the Harrison County Public Library Board of Directors; member and former chairman of the Harrison County Parks Dept.; a trustee and board president at Corydon Christian Church Disciples of Christ; a contributing member of Corydon Optimist Club; and chief investigator under Coroner Paul Cesar. He was trained in chemistry, mathematics and pharmacology, and earned his Ph.D. in 1969 at the University of Missouri. He was honored with awards and fellowships at Alderson-Broaddus College, West Virginia University and the University of Missouri and held faculty positions at the University of Louisville for 41 years, as well as positions on the faculties of the universities of Missouri, Southern Illinois and Tianjin Medical College in China. Len had more than 50 publications and presentations and several book chapters, was an inventor on four U.S. patents, was co-founder of a company dedicated to development of drugs for treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and was honored many times, as a member of the American Society for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi, the American Chemical Society, the Endocrine Society and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He served the University of Louisville on many committees, as vice chairman and as assistant dean, and was awarded the University’s President’s Distinguished Service Award in 2004. Len also served as a mentor for dozens of graduate students on their way to Ph.D. degrees and teaching classes of thousands of students in medical, dental, graduate, nursing and undergraduate courses. He was awarded the Basic Science Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Louisville in 2006.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Vicky and Kathleen Waite; four brothers, Richard, William, John and Kenneth Waite; and a sister, Sally Depp.
Survivors include his wife, the former Edith Kirkwood; a son, Kenneth John Waite of Indianapolis; a daughter, Karen Waite York of Corydon; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Saturday, April 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Corydon Christian Church Disciples of Christ.
Memorial service and fellowship luncheon: Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. at the church. There will be a graveside service at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon for the family.

Arrangements: Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the Dr. Leonard Waite Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Harrison County Community Foundation in Corydon.
