Weather may have been a factor in the finish date of the Floyd Central boys’ swimming sectional, but it didn’t seem to bother a pair of young, up-and-coming talent.
North Harrison’s Dylan Shaffer and Corydon Central’s Caleb Strange logged individual performances that placed both on the podium. The freshmen had to wait until Monday to complete the sectional, due to inclement weather on Saturday. Preliminaries took place Thursday, with all swimming at Highland Hills Middle School.
Among freshmen competing in the 100-yard butterfly, Shaffer was the fastest. Swimming in the final, Shaffer skimmed under the one-minute mark, turning in a time of 59.98 seconds. The effort was good for sixth place. Jeffersonville’s Evan Shive, a senior, won the event in a lightening quick 50.28 seconds.
Earlier in the meet, Shaffer took on the 200-individual medley. Tackling all four swimming disciplines, Shaffer was second in the consolation final, 10th overall with a time of 2:18.17. The winner was Floyd Central senior Noble Guyon (1:56.80), the lone competitor to finish in less than two minutes.
In Strange’s camp, the Panthers freshman took on the longer individual freestyle events.
Strange’s best showing came in the prelims on Thursday when he set a school record in the 500 freestyle. He posted the seventh-fastest time (5:25.87), earning a spot in the eight-man final. In the final, Strange settled for eighth, going in 5:41.63.
Individually, Strange was 10th in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.12. His faster time was in the prelims (2:01.44).
Neither Shaffer nor Strange was able to advance in the state tournament series. Swimmers must win an event at sectional or meet a state standard time to advance to the state final.
Team-wise, Jeffersonville was the top overall scorer with 432 points followed by Floyd Central (397). Corydon Central (95) ended up seventh, North Harrison (58) 11th and Lanesville (12) 15th.
As a team, Corydon Central reached a pair of finals in relays.
The best of the bunch was the distance, 400 free relay. The team of Kyle McPhillips, Steven Coleman, Maxwell Glordan and Strange turned in a time of 4:05.47 in the preliminary swim. Coming back on Monday, the quartet earned sixth place, besting its time with a 3:56.42 performance.
North Harrison’s team (4:04.20) of Andrew Robertson, Nathaniel Lone, Kane Meyer and Shaffer placed 10th.
The other final was the 200 medley relay for the Panthers. Brothers Maxwell and Benjamin Glordan joined McPhillips and Strange to finish eighth with a time of 1:58.52. Placing 10th (2:01.52) was North Harrison’s team of Zachary Outcalt, Lone, Shaffer and Robertson.
Representing Lanesville, junior Noah Boone returned on Monday with a pair of swims in consolation events. Boone nearly made the final in the 100 breaststroke. He went on to win the consolation race, placing ninth overall with a time of 1:11.62.
Boone also swam in the 200 IM on Monday, taking 14th (2:26.11).
One of Corydon Central’s seniors, McPhillips, reached the consolation final of two events. He claimed 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:07.81) and 14th in the 100 freestyle (58.19).
Maxwell Glordan took 15th place in the 100 fly (1:08.31) and 16th in the 100 backstroke (1:12.67).
The 200-freestyle relay event saw Corydon Central (Brian Wood, Joseph Brann, Benjamin Glordan and Coleman) place ninth with a time of 1:46.83, while North Harrison (Lone, Outcalt, Meyer and Robertson) was 12th with a time of 1:49.71.
