Paden 3rd at Connersville, Old Cap Inv. next

The Corydon Central wrestling team got a taste of state-wide competition Friday and Saturday when the Panthers traveled to Connersville for the Spartan Classic.
Thirty-two teams made the voyage to Connersville, located east of Indianapolis near the Indiana-Ohio state line. Brownsburg was the top overall team, scoring 261.5 points, while Zionsville (195) was second. Corydon Central placed 27th with 46 points.
Much of the Panthers’ scoring came from Ezra Paden. The junior came away with a third-place finish in the 145-pound weight class.
Rolling through the winners bracket, Paden scored triumphs over Batesville’s Xavier King, East Noble’s Riley Jones and Western’s Tanner Heady.
Paden’s lone loss came at the expense of Richmond’s Alston Bane, who was ranked No. 13 in the state, during the semi-final. Bane would eventually lose in the championship round to Beech Grove’s Evan Smiley.
In the consolation bracket, Paden defeated Jones for the second time before dropping Brownsburg’s Troy Owens in the match for third place.
Victories for Corydon Central in other classes were few. Managing to scoring wins outside of forfeits were David Brann (220) and Robbie Leuthart (285). Neither, however, was able to place in the top eight.
The Panthers now have turned their attention to this weekend, when they host the annual Old Capital Classic.
Eight teams ‘ Columbus North, Corydon Central, Evansville Central, Floyd Central, Gibson Southern, Lexington (Ky.) Henry Clay, New Albany and Southport ‘ are slated to participate.
Action will kick off in the morning at approximately 9 after weigh-ins.
