Week filled with hoops tourneys

Seven of the eight basketball programs in Harrison County will be busy playing games during the holiday break.
The South Central boys’ and girls’ teams began play in the eight-team Gibson County Toyota Teamwork Classic with a game played Monday and yesterday (Tuesday). Play will continue for both teams on Friday and Saturday.
One event, the boys’ basketball Carriage Ford Classic, will be hosted by North Harrison. The four-team event features defending Class 3A state champion Greensburg, which is currently ranked No. 2 in its class.
North Harrison will kick off the Classic on Saturday when it faces Milan at 10 a.m. followed by Eastern Greene taking on Greensburg. The consolation game is scheduled for 6 p.m. followed by the championship at 8.
Keeping with boys’ basketball, Lanesville will return to the Springs Valley Tournament for a two-day event on Friday and Saturday. The six-team event features pool play with the Eagles opening against West Washington at 2 p.m. on Friday. Other teams include Rising Sun, Paoli, Springs Valley and Loogootee.
Corydon Central, ranked No. 4 in the latest Class 3A poll, will return to the Perry Spencer Classic to defend its reign as the previous year’s champ. Play will begin Friday with the Panthers taking on Forest Park at Tell City at 6:30 p.m.
Class 2A No. 6 Crawford County is on the opposite side of the eight-team bracket, opening with Boonville at 6:30 p.m. at Heritage Hills.
Play continues Saturday before the placement rounds on Tuesday. Other teams include Perry Central, Heritage Hills, South Spencer and Tell City.
At the Toyota Teamwork Classic, played at various Gibson County locations, South Central boys’ and girls’ will play in the third round of pool play on Friday. The girls will take on Mount Vernon at 6:30 p.m. on the campus of Oakland City University, while the boys will take on Castle at 8:15 p.m. at the same location. Placement games will take place Saturday. Other teams include Wood Memorial, Gibson Southern, Evansville Reitz, Mount Carmel (Ill.), Lawrenceville (Ill.) and Princeton.
In girls’ basketball, Princeton is ranked No. 4 in 3A while Wood Memorial is No. 10 in 1A. On the boys’ side, Reitz is No. 7 in 4A.
Shifting to the girls, Corydon Central will participate in the Vincennes Rivet Niehaus Classic, featuring three top-10 teams.
The Lady Panthers will open the eight-team event Friday, taking on Attica at 11:30 a.m. Corydon Central will play a semi-final or consolation game that night before returning Saturday for the placement rounds. Other teams include 3A No. 1 Evansville Mater Dei, 2A No. 11 North Knox, 1A No. 5 Vincennes Rivet, White River Valley, Pike Central and Southridge.
No easy event either, the North Harrison Lady Cats will head to Southwestern (Hanover) to take part in the Rumble on the River.
Games will take place Friday and Saturday. The Lady Cats can seek revenge in the opening round when they face Columbus East (Friday, 2:30 p.m.). The Olympians won a Dec. 6 meeting with North Harrison 49-39. Additional participating teams include 3A No. 11 Madison, 4A No. 12 Fishers, 2A No. 16 Austin, Scottsburg, Southwestern, Connersville and McCutcheon.
If heading out to a tournament featuring local teams, there are a few players to watch. On the boys’ side, Greensburg’s Ryan Welage got off to a fast start this season, scoring 43 points in the season opener. At the Toyota Teamwork Classic, Evansville Reitz’s Jaelan Sanford has signed with Toledo, while, at the PSC Classic, Corydon Central’s Bronson Kessinger has inked with Indiana State University.
On the girls’ side, the Toyota Teamwork Classic features a pair of Indiana’s top juniors. Princeton’s Jackie Young recently pledged a verbal commitment to Notre Dame University, while Reitz’s Emily Sullivan has several Division I offers. At the Niehaus Classic, Butler picked up Mater Dei’s Tori Schickel for the 2015-16 season. At the Rumble on the River, Fisher’s Adrianna Murphy is a quick point guard with college offers.
