Blue River Township voters will elect three members to the township trustee advisory board. There are five candidates seeking the seats: Republicans Fred Churchill, an incumbent, and Michael L. Smith, and Democrats Imogene (Imy) Berkenmeyer and Thomas C. Black, both incumbents, and Richard Smith. The top three vote-getters will serve a four-year term. Questionnaires were sent to the candidates, and a photo was requested. Black did not respond to the request, and Churchill and Richard Smith declined to submit a photo. Here are the candidates’ responses.

Why are you seeking the office (in 100 words or less)? I have been interested in township government for some time, and I feel the timing is right to run for this position. I want to work with the trustee to continue making Blue River Township a great place to live.

If elected, what will you do to serve the people of Blue River Township (in 150 words or less)? I will work with the trustee and other board members to make the best decisions for our township. I will be open to all ideas, and I will work hard to get the job done.

Education/Occupation/Political experience: B.S. in agriculture; M.S. Plus in education. I have been a farmer all my adult life and was a public school science teacher for 30 years. Have been on Blue River Township advisory board for eight years.

Why are you seeking the office (in 100 words or less)? I want to assist the Blue River Township trustee in obtaining a Ramsey Volunteer Fire Dept. station located in Blue River Township.

If elected, what will you do to serve the people of Blue River Township (in 150 words or less)? I will continue to work with the trustee on routine responsibilities and support the idea of building a fire station in the township.

Education/Occupation/Political experience: Majored in electrical engineering at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute; manager distribution design engineering, South Area, for Duke Energy. I am responsible for the proper design of all new distribution projects in the Clarksville, Corydon, Madison and Seymour districts. Vice precinct committeeman, Blue River Township. Poll worker last two elections, inspector Blue River South Poll in Milltown. Member of Harrison County Emergency Management Agency board.

Why are you seeking the office (in 100 words or less)? With my experience with budgets and managing projects, I can help the trustee of Blue River make the difficult decisions in how to use the township’s money in an unbiased way.
If elected, what will you do to serve the people of Blue River Township (in 150 words or less)? I will work with the trustee in obtaining funding to help serve the people of Blue River Township. I will work with the trustee to ensure all current projects that are needed are continued. I will work with the trustee to help fund a volunteer fire station in the central Blue River Township area.
