Frederick L. Hitner
Frederick L. Hitner, 88, Edwardsville, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at The Villas of Guerin Woods in Georgetown.
Born April 16, 1926, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Nancy Edith Mottweiler Hitner.
He owned and operated Hitner Grocery Store from 1949 to 1976 in Edwardsville, was a former Georgetown trustee, auditor, assistant road supervisor and recorder, was the first president of the Edwardsville Water Corp., was instrumental in founding Edwardsville Park, was a member of Parkway Baptist Church in New Albany and VFW Post 1693, was a past master for the Georgetown Masonic Lodge, was a World War II veteran, where he was in the 106th Infantry, and was involved with other organizations.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Esther Summers.
Survivors include four sons, Ronald Davidson of Greenville, Donald and Glen Hitner, both of Edwardsville, and John Hitner (Laura) of Floyds Knobs; two daughters, Sandra McCullum of New Albany and Rebecca Schellenberg of Sellersburg; a brother, Thomas Albert Hitner of Manteca, Calif; two sisters, Dorothy Hubler and Mary Egle, both of New Albany; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7, and Thursday, Sept. 4, after 9 a.m. at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Georgetown.
Funeral: Thursday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in Edwardsville Cemetery.
