Juanita Cesar has always wanted to own and operate an assisted living facility for those elderly folks who don’t yet have a need for a nursing home. And that’s exactly what she’s done with the purchase of the three-story home at the corner of East Chestnut and Maple streets in downtown Corydon, now called Red Rose Manor assisted living for the elderly.
‘It’s the perfect place for what I wanted,’ Cesar said of the residence she purchased last year.
Cesar said her mother was in a nursing home for six years and she knew she, and others, didn’t need to be there.
She said she likes the convenience of being downtown so the residents can walk to the square for events or shopping. Red Rose Manor also will provide transportation for those needing to go somewhere.
Cesar said it’s not a nursing home, won’t be institutionalized and residents will be treated independently with no set wake up, meal or bed times.
The house had been vacant for a number of years but was remodeled to be a bed and breakfast about 15 years ago, Cesar said. The only aspect of the interior of the house that had to be changed was the addition of an elevator.
‘We didn’t have to do any remodeling,’ she said.
Cesar has had some work done to the exterior of the building and is in the process of landscaping the grounds.
A courtyard area will be completed this spring.
Red Rose Manor currently contains six available bedrooms that can be made into double occupancy for couples.
The main floor includes a visitor’s room, kitchen, laundry room, common room and a library, which includes a ready-for-playing piano. The main floor also has a large porch with plenty of room for seating.
The second floor includes bedrooms with complete private bathrooms. It also has a walk-out deck area for residents.
‘It’s a nice place to go out, or for an exit if there’s a fire,’ Cesar said.
Cesar said she intends to live at the residence.
‘I’ll help people during the day and make sure it’s run like I want it to run,’ she said.
The third floor also contains bedrooms.
All of the rooms at Red Rose Manor are similar to what one would find in a single-family house.
Cesar said Red Rose Manor will cook, clean and provide laundry service for residents.
There’s also a carriage house on the property that could be made into a residence area in the future, she said.
The original structure of the home was built in the late 1800s.
