DDC marketplace plan gets nod to proceed

A Signature Grant application from Develop Downtown Corydon and Main Street Corydon to the Harrison County Community Foundation for the purchase of the current location of the Indian Creek Marketplace ‘ located behind the old Wash-A-Rama Laundromat between Poplar and Chestnut streets in downtown Corydon ‘ has been submitted.
In November, photos and artist renderings were submitted to the Corydon Town Council to seek approval of the venture.
If accepted, the vacant Laundromat building would be torn down and replaced by a 3,000-square-foot brick building and would include green spaces on the property and benches for gathering.
The new building would be built a couple of feet above the flood plain (it would be handicapped accessible with a ramp on the north side of the structure), have overhead doors on either side to allow for a breeze when open, have bathroom facilities and there would be black steel supports holding up wooden shades for additional vendors near the parking area. Only one parking spot on the current site would be lost in the renovation.
Develop Downtown Corydon would also like to acquire a vacant lot along Chestnut Street for frontage of the marketplace and for the site of a second green space with benches and an iron railing identifying the marketplace.
Tracy Webber, on behalf of DDC, went to businesses in the downtown business district with a questionnaire to get a tally of interest from business owners. The response for the proposal was extremely favorable, Webber said.
The project proposal passed an initial review by the Foundation and received the go-ahead to submit an application for the grant.
Hearing the favorable results from the questionnaire, the Corydon Town Council gave DDC and Main Street the nod to push forward.
The Foundation will review the request and decide later this year whether or not to issue the grant.
