Floyd Kenneth Byerley, 96, Corydon, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany.
Born Aug. 24, 1917, in Harrison County, he was the son of the late Zetta Baxley Byerley and Shelby Byerley Sr.
He was retired from Keller Manufacturing Co. in Corydon, was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corydon, VFW Post No. 2950 in Corydon, where he was past commander and chaplain, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1808, the original Main Street Corydon committee and the final Harrison and Crawford counties Selective Service Board. He served on the Corydon Town Council for 16 years, the Corydon Planning and Zoning Board and the Board of Zoning Appeals and was involved in various volunteer efforts at church events and community affairs. He was an Army veteran, having served in the South Pacific with the 152nd Infantry Regiment during World War II.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, the former Agnes M. Vernia; three brothers, Cecil, Loran and Raymond Byerley; and three sisters, Pauline Byerley, Mary Alice Lowe and Elsie Kathryn (Katie) McCutchen Walter.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia L. McGill of Cincinnati, and a brother, Shelby Byerley Jr. of New Albany.
Visitation: Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a vigil serviced at 6, and Thursday, Dec. 19, after 9 a.m. at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.
Funeral Mass: Thursday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, both in Corydon.
Officiant: Father Rob Hankee.
Pallbearers: David, Stanley and Steve Byerley, Greg Kingsley, Richard Schreck and Ken Saltsgaver.
Honorary pallbearer: Greg Byerley.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the St. Joseph Catholic Church School Scholarship Fund.
