Since opening in 2002 and until moving a couple of months ago, Frederick’s Caf’ was located along Elm Street. It still is within a rock’s throw of the First State Capitol Building, but Frederick’s is now located at the corner of Capitol Avenue and Walnut Street, offering much of the same made-from-scratch food that it’s been known for.
Debi and Ron Frederick own the restaurant and pride themselves on quality, hand-made food at a ‘fair’ price. Only a couple of items on the menu are outside of the made-from-scratch genre; of those, Debi Frederick said the only reason they aren’t handmade is because they actually taste better than handmade.
‘We’re pretty picky about what we serve and the quality of the food,’ she said.
In addition to a different locale, Frederick’s has expanded its hours and now offers evening dining. A dinner menu starts at 4 Thursday through Saturday evenings.
Included on the dinner menu are a 12-ounce New York strip steak, pork chops (two six-ounce or one six-ounce), hamburger steak, a seven-ounce chicken breast or seven-piece fried shrimp. Dinners include baked potato, a side salad or cup of soup and a dinner roll; prices range from $8.99 to $22.99.
The dinner menu is expected to grow as the Fredericks figure out what customers like or ask for. For instance, a smaller steak option is in the works.
‘We’ve been down here (on the town square) since 2002, and there’s no place around that has a good steak, and we are steak lovers,’ Debi Frederick said. ‘We really liked these New York strips, but we’re very picky about the quality of our items and had to send some smaller steaks back. We weren’t happy with the smaller ones our distributor was offering, so we are still looking for the best quality.’
She added that a light, hand-breaded fish and fries option on Fridays should be up and running soon.
The breakfast menu remains the same, with the more popular items being omelets, home fries made to order on a flat-top grill and pancakes.
‘The pancakes we say are as big as your head, but really they are bigger,’ Debi Frederick said.
Signature lunch items include a variety of sandwiches, such as the club, turkey club, reuben and patty melt.
‘The clubs are unique because they are not something that you can get as big as ours or made the same way. The reuben, people say it’s the best they’ve ever had,’ Debi Frederick said. ‘Also, the cheeseburger, people say it’s the best cheeseburger in town and county.’
Soon Fredericks will offer wine. It already offers table-service beer.
‘We’re going to start slow and offer a red and white and then, as we see how people like it, we’ll go from there,’ Debi Frederick said. ‘I know a lot of people associate this location with a bar, but, while we have a liquor license, the only thing we have is table service, which means you can have a beer or wine with your meal. We’re family friendly. Down the road, we plan on expanding upstairs and making it a full bar with adults only and seating outside on the balcony.’
Several people have already commented on the new location, noting that it is handicapped accessible and the farmhouse decor.
Frederick’s Caf’ hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday hours are from 8 a.m. to noon. The phone number is 738-3733.
