Man dies in single-vehicle crash

A Marengo man died last Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash near Milltown.
Loren F. Hughes, 82, was traveling east on S.R. 64 when he ran off the north side of the road, traveled approximately 110 feet and struck a tree and a rock wall near Main Road just after 4 p.m., according to Officer J. Harrell of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept. Hughes’ pick-up truck landed on its passenger side.
A witness who had been following Hughes in Crawford County then into Harrison County minutes before the crash told police that Hughes had not been swerving or showing any signs of erratic driving prior to the crash. However, soon after entering Harrison County, Hughes’ vehicle drifted across the center line and went off the road. Harrell said there were no skid or brake marks to indicate that Hughes had tried to stop before running off the road.
Hughes, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Harrison County Coroner Rusty Sizemore said Hughes had a pacemaker and may have suffered a medical condition prior to the crash.
Assisting at the scene were Harrison County Hospital Emergency Medical Services and the Ramsey Volunteer Fire Dept.
Hughes’ funeral was Monday at Brown Funeral Home in Milltown.
