South Harrison schools may add archery program
At its Oct. 1 meeting at Corydon Intermediate School, the South Harrison Community School Corp. Board of Trustees agreed to pursue grant funding and to permit the establishment of school-based archery clubs at Corydon Central High School and South Central Junior-Senior High School, if funding is awarded.
The National Archery in Schools Program was developed to serve these specific educational and conservation purposes. NASP was co-created by the Kentucky Dept. of Fish & Wildlife Resources and the Dept. of Education and Mathews Archery in the late summer and fall of 2001. The program was launched in 21 Kentucky middle schools in March 2002. Originally called the Kentucky Archery in the Schools Program, the effort’s goal was to enroll 120 schools and teach target archery skills to 24,000 students each year. Kentucky gave itself three years to achieve this goal.
Within the program’s first year, the 120-school goal was achieved and, because of neighbor-state interest, ‘National’ replaced ‘Kentucky’ in the program’s name.
South Harrison Supt. Dr. Neyland Clark said a grant is available for the program. He noted that safety was of the highest priority and there has yet to be any type of incident of those taking part in NASP in Indiana.
In another matter, the board approved a roofing project at Corydon Elementary School. The section over the third-grade wing is one of the older sections of CES. The project is estimated to cost approximately $90,000.
Clark announced that 38 students at South Central Elementary and 53 students at Corydon Elementary would take part in intersession for fall break, with academic activities taking place in the morning and enrichment programs in the afternoon.
The board approved several items on the agenda, including a $500 donation from Lucas Oil for cheerleader uniforms at South Central Junior-Senior High School, swim-lane rental at the YMCA of Harrison County and a donation of $4,849.98 from the band boosters for South Central’s Indoor Percussion Program.
The board also approved the master contract for 2013-14 and a compensation increase of 2.5 percent for building administrators, central office employees, salaried employees and hourly employees.
