Marengo marshal on 2-week leave

The police officer involved in the Aug. 16 pursuit that resulted in one person dying has been granted a two-week paid leave.
The Marengo Town Council, which met in special session last Wednesday evening, approved Marshal James Harrington’s request for the leave of absence. Unless an extension is granted, Harrington, who works part time, is to return to duty next Wednesday.
According to the Indiana State Police, the pursuit began when Robert Michael Banet, 44, of Leavenworth, who was driving a 1991 GMC pick-up truck with defective taillights, refused to stop. Harrington pursued Banet for about a mile north along Valeene Road before Banet lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree.
Banet’s passenger, Jeannine Marie Farrell, 56, of Mauckport, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Crawford County Coroner’s Office. Banet was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The ISP investigated the crash, and their findings were to be turned over to the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
