Crash claims E-beth man
An Elizabeth man died as the result of a single-vehicle crash late last month.
According to a crash report from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept., Willard R. Decker Jr., 37, was driving his maroon 1994 Honda Accord north on S.R. 111 north of S.R. 211 on June 29.
Witnesses of the crash said he was driving too fast to negotiate a curve in the road and drove off the road, sliding sideways and striking a ditch, causing the vehicle to flip into the air.
The vehicle flipped a second time, at which point it appears Decker was ejected from the vehicle, and came to rest in a cornfield, witnesses told police.
An unconscious Decker was found approximately 25 feet from the vehicle.
Harrison County Hospital Emergency Medical Services transported Decker to Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany, where he later was pronounced dead.
A crash investigation completed by Harrison County Deputy Nathan Ranke indicated that the vehicle traveled approximately 110 feet past the first point of impact and from the first point of impact to the vehicle’s final resting place was about 185 feet.
The driver’s side and passenger side airbags deployed, but the driver’s side seat belt was not latched, according to the report.
