Harrison Countians can now turn in scrap metal for cash in Corydon with the opening of Dixie Scrap Metal Inc. along Gardner Lane.
‘Our motto is ‘If it’s made of metal, we buy it’,’ employee Troy Jupin said.
One of the unique and customer-friendly aspects of the facility is it is a drive-thru service and customers can see the scales on which the metal is weighed.
‘A lot of scrap yards don’t let you do that,’ Jupin said.
The drive-thru area also allows for easy unloading.
Dixie Scrap Metal officially opened June 6, and business has steadily picked up ever since, Jupin said.
‘It’s a great location; we lucked out on this,’ he said.
The facility buys aluminum of all sorts, including secondary, sheet, cast, 6061 through 6063 and cans; copper, including bare bright, No. 1 and No. 2; yellow and foundry brass, No. 1, No. 2 and phone or low-grade wire; aluminum, copper or iron radiators; and lead, batteries, motors, catalytic converters, electric scrap and steel.
A sign located in the office building details the price paid per metal type.
Dixie Scrap Metal is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The owner of Dixie Scrap Metal, which also has a Louisville location along Dixie Highway in Valley Station, is Jim Chestnut.
Chestnut said the facility also takes cars, farm equipment and machinery, obsolete equipment and ‘basically anything with metal.’
As of now, there’s only a couple of employees but, if business increases, they may add personnel from the area.
‘We’ve got to support the community,’ Jupin said.
Chestnut said a warehouse will be added in the future at site.
Dixie Scrap Metal is located at 1775 Gardner Lane. The phone number is 1-812-705-5008.
