Mullens joins newspaper staff as summer intern
Brandon Mullens began a summer internship at O’Bannon Publishing Co. last week. His main duties will be assisting The Corydon Democrat and Clarion News staff. The Georgetown resident is the son of Tim and Julie Mullens.
‘I’m really excited about gaining the experience I need to become a successful journalist, and I think The Corydon Democrat will provide me with that experience,’ he said.
Mullens, 21, is a 2010 graduate of Lanesville Junior-Senior High School where he played basketball and baseball. He will be a senior at Franklin College and plans to graduate in May 2014 with a journalism degree and a minor in history.
Mullens has taken different types of journalism classes at Franklin College to prepare him for his future in journalism.
‘I have a lot of experience in video production, writing and social media,’ he said. ‘My professors at Franklin College keep me updated on the new technology and how it is changing the journalism world.’
He was a sports reporter on Franklin College’s campus newspaper last year and he plans to be a sports reporter at Franklin again this fall. Mullens also will start as a student assistant of the sports information director at Franklin this fall.
Mullens hopes to be a writer for ESPN in the future or write for any popular sports magazine. If that doesn’t work out, then he would like to be a reporter for his favorite basketball team, the Indiana Hoosiers.
‘I grew up watching the Hoosiers play. They fascinate me,’ he said. ‘I’m always watching ESPN and I thought it would be cool to write for them, but, if I could write for my favorite team, that would be great.’
Mullens’ main hobbies are listening to music, watching basketball, hanging out with his friends, playing video games and he loves watching movies. He mentions that his favorite movie is ‘Hoosiers.’
‘I think that should be everyone’s favorite movie,’ he said.
