Spalding’s McAfee named top newcomer
The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced the 2013 All-Conference Softball Team and special award winners.
Fontbonne’s Madison Leonard, a freshman pitcher, and Spalding University’s Alyssa McAfee, a freshman utility player, shared SLIAC Newcomer of the Year honors.
McAfee, a 2012 North Harrison High School graduate, had a .457 average at the plate, compiling 21 hits, one double, three triples, two home runs and 14 RBIs. On the mound, McAfee had a 4-1 record in six total appearances and 28.2 innings pitched.
McAfee was also named to the All-SLIAC First Team as a utility player. She was one of two Golden Eagles to make First Team.
Fontbonne University’s Marissa Simon, a junior shortstop, received one of the top softball honors this season as she was named 2013 SLIAC Player of the Year. Fontbonne’s Rachel McCarthy, a junior, also received one of the top softball honors this season as she was named 2013 SLIAC Pitcher of the Year.
Spalding’s season ended Saturday, dropping a pair of games in the SLIAC Tournament. The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 20-19 record.
