It was announced after the 500-yard individual event that North Harrison trailed leader Scottsburg by 4-1/2 points in the team standings, helping build anticipation of the final four races at the Mid-Southern Conference girls’ swim meet.
North Harrison would tiptoe ahead after the 100 backstroke, 246-1/2 to 221, after the Lady Cats placed three swimmers in the top four. The lead was short-lived when Scottsburg’s Leila Kermanshahi won the 100 breaststroke and the Lady Warriors 400 free relay team edged out North Harrison in the finale.
Scottsburg eventually celebrated both outside and in the water after claiming the Mid-Southern Conference title in girls’ swimming Thursday at the YMCA of Harrison County, hosted by North Harrison. The final tally was a slim margin: Scottsburg closed with 286 points, while North Harrison had 278-1/2. Corydon Central finished third with 220-1/2.
Putting in individual championship performances were North Harrison’s Bailey Seitz and Corydon Central’s Amanda Wells.
Seitz won both individual races she competed in, the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. In the free sprint, Seitz posted a quick time of 26.44 seconds. Wells would placed fifth in the 50.
Returning to the pool later in the meet, Seitz won the backstroke handily, touching the wall in 1:07.62. Her teammates were close behind with Abigail Purser finishing second and Natalie Hollensead taking fourth. Corydon Central’s Kendall McKiever was fifth.
Wells, meanwhile, was in a tight battle to lay claim to the fastest in the 100 butterfly. She held off Purser for the top spot, flying in 1:12.98. North Harrison’s Alexis Curtis finished third, and Kendall Frantz was fourth.
Scottsburg won two of the three relay events. North Harrison finished second in all three. Participating in relays for the Lady Cats were Abbey Stone, Meredith Ingle, Camryn Schmidt, Hollensead, Seitz and Purser.
Other top North Harrison finishes were Brittany McCarty (second, 200 freestyle and fourth, 500 freestyle), Ingle (third, 100 freestyle) and Stone (fourth, 100 freestyle).
Notable performances from Corydon Central were Marissa Brann (fourth, 200 freestyle), Ashley Strange (fourth, 200 individual medley and fifth 100 breaststroke) and Gloria Harper (fifth, 500 freestyle).
The girls’ swimming sectional will take place Jan. 31 (swimming preliminaries) and Feb. 2 (diving, consolation and finals in swimming), hosted by Floyd Central.
