Pedestrian dies in morning crash

A New Salisbury man was fatally injured when he was struck by a vehicle on S.R. 64 at about 7:20 yesterday morning (Tuesday).
The incident occurred near old S.R. 64 between Ramsey and New Salisbury, according to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept.
The victim, Richard J. Berg, 61, lived along S.R. 64 about 200 yards west of Mayden Trail, a neighbor said, and often walked along the road to New Salisbury.
Emergency personnel had S.R. 64 closed for more than two hours while completing their report and clearing the scene at about 9:45.
The driver that struck Berg, Joshua C. Sommerman, 38, English, told police he never saw Berg, who was walking along the south side of the road, prior to his impact with the windshield.
Police said it was dark and lightly raining at the time of the crash, and Berg was wearing dark-colored clothing.
Assisting at the scene were the Ramsey and Palmyra Volunteer Fire departments, Emergency Management Agency, Indiana State Police, EMS and the coroner’s office.
