John L. Bays Sr.

John Lee Bays Sr., 75, Corydon, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Hosparus Inpatient Care Center in Louisville.
Born Oct. 15, 1937, in Covington, Ky., he was the son of the late Elbert L. and Gladys Dalton Bays.
He was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corydon and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, the former Janice Vaughn; three sons, John L. Bays Jr. of St. Louis, Jay P. Bays of Ramsey and Jaime L. Bays of Georgetown; a daughter, Jolene Downs of Palmyra; two sisters, Mildred (Midge) Despain of Corydon and Sherry Kopp of Cocolalla, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Visitation: Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 1 to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 7:30, and Wednesday, Dec. 5, after 9 a.m. at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.
Funeral Mass: Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corydon with burial and military rites in the church cemetery.
Celebrant: Father Rob Hankee.
Pallbearers: William and Michael Downs, Denver and Jake Bays and Jonathan and Jeremy Vaughn.
Honorary pallbearers: Jessi, Julie and Justin Bays, Samantha Childers, Michelle Jones, Amber and Nyc Bond and Anthony Jones.
The family suggests memorial gifts to his church.
