A senior at North Harrison High School died and one other was seriously injured last week when the car they were in crashed Tuesday afternoon shortly after school dismissed for the day.
David Austin, 17, Crandall, was a passenger in the car and was ejected during the crash. Harrison County Coroner Rusty Sizemore said the teen died from blunt force trauma.
The driver of the car, Ethan Rauchmiller, 18, Palmyra, was transported via Air Methods air ambulance to University Hospital in Louisville. He was released Friday.
According to a preliminary crash report from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept., Rauchmiller was driving a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta east on Whiskey Run Road when, for an unknown reason, it went off the left side of the roadway. Rauchmiller overcorrected, causing the vehicle to go into a sideways skid across the road and then off the right side of the pavement. The car struck a phone junction box and slid approximately 115 feet through the yard of a home before the tires caught in the yard and caused the vehicle to flip.
The Jetta wound up in a driveway ‘ on its wheels ‘ but Austin had been ejected at some point while the car flipped.
According to the crash report, neither Austin nor Rauchmiller was wearing a seat belt.
Investigation into the crash is continuing.
