Stop, hammer time!
Dip into the 1990 catalog of popular music, and there is no doubt M.C. Hammer’s song ‘U Can’t Touch This’ could refresh those catchy lyrics.
At the annual SISA Swim Champs meet Saturday, hosted by West Clark, the Harrison County Swim Team came away with the team title for the first time since 1988, before M.C. Hammer gained popularity.
‘It was back and forth all day between us and West Clark,’ Hammerheads’ board president Kelly Wells said. ‘They announced the standings after every 10 events. It would be West Clark up about 30 points, then we’d be up around 30 points. It was very emotional, but we managed to make it to the end on top.’
The Hammerheads finished with 2,557 points, followed by West Clark with 2,459. Rounding out the field were Jeffersonville 2,185, New Albany-Floyd County 1,214.5, Charlestown 415, South Harrison 324 and Clarksville 89.5.
Wells, who is stepping down as president at the end of the season but will remain on the board, said many swimmers and parents were elated at the victory.
‘It’s great, especially for the senior swimmers that won’t come back next summer. Many have worked hard for several years,’ she said. ‘We also have parents, who, on the team years ago, strived to win Swim Champs but didn’t. I’m one of them. Now, we have a win through our kids, which is great.’
This season the Hammerheads had a tremendous roster of 174 to compete in under 8-years-olds up to 18-years-old events. At Swim Champs, the Hammerheads sent 130 to the pool. Some couldn’t make the event due to planned vacations or illness or elected to skip the all-day event. Concluding at 6:30 p.m. after starting in the early morning, Swim Champs makes for a long day. Wells said the heat was bearable through much of the competition.
Camaraderie exists among the top programs.
During the regular season meeting between the Hammerheads and West Clark, the local Harrison County team raised money for their opponents’ families that were affected by the tornado that ripped through Henryville in March. Kids on the Harrison County team designed T-shirts and had a ‘penny war’ to raise money.
‘Amy Hunt, the president of SISA and the West Clark team, when she announced the awards, said if they had to lose to anybody, they were glad it was Harrison County,’ Wells said. ‘We’ve always been rivals, but we have a great relationship. During the regular season, she dressed in green (Hammerheads colors) and I dressed in blue with blue hair (West Clark colors).’
Wells said the environment around the pool was typical of Swim Champs: teams rooting for opponents and good sportsmanship leading to good competition.
Fielding the largest team in Hammerheads’ history was a challenge. Many swimmers fall into the 10-and-under categories. Andy Pappano, Vince Cecil and Nadia Pendleton serve as coaches, while Scott Glordan stepped up as a volunteer coach.
‘Andy is a great coach,’ Wells said. ‘Technique is a big deal to Andy. He tells the kids speed will come if swimming the correct technique.’
The following individuals had first-place finishes: Tristan Deaton (11-12 boys 50 backstroke), Ezra Pappano (10-under boys 50 breaststroke, 10-under boys 50 butterfly), Dylan Shaffer (11-12 boys 50 breaststroke, 11-12 boys 50 butterfly, 11-12 boys 100 individual medley), Bernadette Mueller (8-under girls 25 butterfly, 8-under girls 25 freestyle) and Amelia Hoagland (6-under girls 25 freestyle) and Alexis Blessinger (10-under girls 50 freestyle).
Harrison County also won the 11-12 boys 200 medley relay, 10-under girls 100 freestyle relay and 11-12 boys 200 freestyle relay.
Improvements become obvious at the end of the seven-week season.
‘We had young kids at the beginning of the season that just held on to the wall, but, by champs, they are swimming the length of the pool,’ Wells said. ‘It’s a great sport to carry through life. Sports doctors will tell you swimming is the best sports because it is easy on joints.’
The team had its annual cookout and swim party yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon to celebrate Hammer Time one more time.
Logging first-place showings for the South Harrison Seahawks, based out of Elizabeth were: Kenny Deatrick (11-12 boys 100 freestyle), Dustin Davis (10-under boys 25 breaststroke) and Charles Tostaine (13-14 boys 50 breaststroke).
