SCJSHS student dies in crash

Clint Burns, 17, a back-seat passenger in a vehicle involved in a crash Thursday afternoon near Elizabeth, died of multiple blunt force trauma upon impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred at 3:25 p.m., shortly after students at South Central Junior-Senior High School were released from school for the day. Burns, as well as the three others in the vehicle, was a student at the school.
The vehicle, a gray, 1993 Honda sedan, was traveling north on S.R. 11 when it struck a tree on the west side of the road just outside of the Elizabeth town limit after the driver, Christopher Coffey, 17, over-corrected from running off of the right side of the road.
Coffey was transported to University Hospital in Louisville via helicopter as was Jessica Book, 16, the back-seat passenger behind the driver. Justin Behr, 17, who was riding in the front seat, was transported by ambulance to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
According to the report from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, the crash is still under investigation but all indications point to excessive speed as the main contributing factor.
Reconstructionists from the Indiana State Police is conducting the investigation.
Assisting at the scene were personnel from Harrison County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters from Elizabeth and New Middletown Volunteer Fire departments.
Grief counselors were at the school Friday to provide support to students and staff.
