The rivalry between the Jeffersonville and Floyd Central wrestling teams drew most of the attention Saturday from spectators at the Jeffersonville Sectional.
The host Red Devils came away with the narrow team victory, outscoring Floyd Central 265-253. Corydon Central placed ninth of 10 teams with 38 points but advanced a pair of wrestlers to regional competition.
In the 113-pound weight class, Corydon Central’s Bailey LaHue looked to improve upon his 31-1 record at the open of the sectional. A pair of forfeits placed the Panther freshman in the semi-final against Jeffersonville’s Xavier Weekly. Against Weekly, LaHue scored a second-period pin to reach the final.
In the final, LaHue squared off against Floyd Central’s Chris Whitley. Whitley scored the first two points with 15 seconds remaining in the first period with a takedown.
LaHue was able to keep Whitley grounded in the second period but wasn’t able to score. Battling back in the final period, LaHue notched two points for a reversal to tie the match. Whitley, however, managed to score a single point with an escape near the edge of the outer circle with 12.5 seconds left to take the match, 3-2.
Panther senior Gregory Carver (285 weight class) also qualified for regional as an individual. He pinned New Washington’s Jerry Fox to reach the semi-final, where he met up with Jeffersonville’s Gavin Jolly-Little. Earlier in the year, Jolly-Little defeated Carver by pin; however, at sectional, Carver put up a fight. Jolly-Little, who went on to win the sectional, narrowly defeated Carver, 2-1.
Carver’s most crucial match came in the consolation bracket, where he had to defeat Eastern’s (Pekin) Brian Arnold to secure a spot at regional. It took overtime, but Carver managed to come away with a 5-2 win. In the third-place match, Carver lost to Floyd Central’s Just Koehler, 2-1.
Also for Corydon Central, Brenden Walters placed sixth at 126, losing to Artemio Gomez from Charlestown in the fifth-place match.
The top four in each weight class from the Jeffersonville Sectional will join with the same from the Southridge Sectional to compete Saturday in the Jeffersonville Regional. Wrestling will begin at 9 a.m. with the top four from each weight class advancing to semi-state. Admission will be $6 per person.
