New Salisbury man succumbs to injuries

A head-on crash Saturday morning resulted in the death of a New Salisbury man and injuries to two other people.
According to a report from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department at about 7:30, Mark E. Hammack, 24, New Salisbury, was northbound on S.R. 135 near Shady Lane in a 2005 Ford Taurus when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2006 Chevrolet Impala driven by 74-year-old Clyde V. Smith of New Salisbury. Smith had a 17-year-old passenger in the car with him at the time of the crash.
All three people were taken to University Hospital in Louisville with serious injuries. Smith later died at the hospital.
The report says both Smith and his passenger were wearing seat belts. It’s not known, however, whether or not Hammack was restrained at the time of the crash.
The crash is still under investigation.
