Calvin B. Willis
Calvin B. Willis, 85, Valparaiso, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at his home.
Born Jan. 7, 1926, in Mauckport, he was the son of the late William A. and Mildred R. Richard Willis.
He was a World War II who served in the South Pacific; an educator for 39 years, including a teacher and coach in Borden, a teacher and principal at Westville High School and superintendent of Porter County Schools for 19 years; and an administrator for the Porter County Special Education Co-op for 18 years, the Porter County Vocational Cooperative for 17 years and the occupational Development Center in six northwest Indiana counties for seven years. During his tenure as superintendent, he gained state approval and supervised the construction of 19 building projects. He was a member of Valparaiso Rotary Club, the Purdue and Indiana University Alumni, Phi Delta Kappa, Mauckport United Methodist Church, Free & Accepted Masons Lodge No. 192, 32nd degree Mason in the Valley of South Bend and a Shriner of the Michigan City Orak Temple.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, the former Jeane Pitman, on Aug. 20, 1995, and a daughter, Dr. Jan Rees.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Timothy O. Willis of Westville; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bartholomew Funeral Home in Valparaiso.
Funeral: Thursday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with entombment at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
Officiant: Pastor Bill McClure.
