The Floyd Central boys’ swimming sectional marked the end of the season for local swim teams, but not without several strong showings.
Corydon Central’s 200 freestyle relay team reached the A-final with a time of 1:42.35 in the prelims. In the finals on Saturday, the Panther team of Marcus Jones, Cole McKiever, Conor Whooley and Colin Lyell placed sixth with a time of 1:41.19.
The sectional, hosted by Floyd Central at Highland Hills Middle School, saw Jeffersonville run away with the team title with 364 points. Floyd Central placed second with 285. Corydon Central placed eighth (43 points), while North Harrison (13 points) was 11th and Lanesville (five points) was 14th.
Corydon Central’s team of Jones, Lyell, McKiever and Spencer Sillings combined to finish seventh (3:50.31) in the 400 freestyle relay.
The 200 medley relay team from Corydon Central (Whooley, Sillings, Lyell and Jones) placed ninth overall. They swam a time of 1:57.44 in the final, besting their 1:59.31 performance at prelims.
Lyell placed 10th in the 100 butterfly. The Corydon Central swimmer posted identical times in the final and prelims, 1:00.65. North Harrison’s Billy Davis was 12th in the fly, swimming in 1:04.20 in the final. He was faster in the prelims (1:01.14).
Lanesville’s Vince Cecil posted quick times in the 100 freestyle. Cecil swam the prelims in 54.47 seconds and placed 12th overall when he swam in 55.64 in the final.
Other top finishes by area swimmers were McKiever, Corydon Central (14th, 200 freestyle); Sillings, Corydon Central (14th, 200 individual medley; 14th, 500 freestyle); Cecil, Lanesville (17th, 50 freestyle); Taylor Johnson, Lanesville (16th, 100 free-style); Davis, North Harrison (15th, 100 backstroke); and Ben Wellner, North Harrison (13th, 100 breaststroke).
