Three first-place finishes from Corydon Central’s Colin Lyell provided the push to the Mid-Southern Conference championship at Thursday’s meet at Salem Middle School.
It was a narrow victory for the Panthers among the six-team field. Finishing with 277 points was enough to take the top spot over Scottsburg, which finished with 271 points. Taking third was Salem (207) followed by North Harrison (117).
Lyell scored two individual wins, the first coming in the 200-yard freestyle. It was a less-than-one-second win over Scottsburg’s Bryce Peters. Lyell closed the event with a time of 2:03.02. In the same race, Panther teammate Daniel Shireman finished fourth (2:16.26).
Victory No. 2 for Lyell came in the 100 butterfly when he cruised to a comfortable victory in 1:00.87. Fellow Corydon Central swimmer Jonathon Brann took sixth in the race (1:17.74).
Later in the evening, Lyell was part of the 200 freestyle relay team that covered the race in 1:44.9, good for a better-than-two-second team win. Joining Lyell was Marcus Jones, Cole McKiever and Conor Whooley.
The Panthers finished third in the other two relays, the 200 medley (2:03.41) and 400 freestyle (4:00.84).
Corydon Central’s Spencer Sillings notched a pair of second-place finishes for the Panthers. His first came in the 200 individual medley, recording a time of 2:22.46. McKiever finished fourth (2:33.72). Sillings was also second in the distance event, the 500 freestyle. He closed the race with a time of 5:47.09, while teammate Jared Eichmiller finished behind him in third (6:28.62).
Other top Corydon Central finishers included Mc Kiever (fourth, 100 freestyle), Eichmiller (fourth, 100 breaststroke), Marcus Jones (fifth, 50 freestyle), Shireman (sixth, 100 freestyle) and Brann (fifth, 100 backstroke).
North Harrison was led by Billy Davis’ performance. Davis scored a win and a third-place finish for the Cougars. His win came in the 100 freestyle where he sprinted the event in 57.47 seconds.
Earlier in the meet, Davis placed third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:28.94.
Also in the medley event, North Harrison’s Ben Wellner placed fifth (2:41.94). Wellner had a strong showing in the 100 breaststroke, swimming in 1:12.55 for a second-place finish.
Remaining top Cougar finishers were Brandon Knight (fifth, 100 freestyle) and Luke Lu (sixth, 100 breaststroke).
The boys’ sectional meet will take place at Highland Hills Middle School on Thursday, Feb. 17, (preliminaries) and Saturday, Feb. 19 (finals).
The girls’ sectional meet will take place at Highland Hills Middle School on Thursday (preliminaries) and Friday (finals).
