Teen dies, 5 injured in crash near Carefree
A teenager has died from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Interstate 64 near Carefree.
According to police, a Chevrolet Lumina van was headed west on I-64 when, for unknown reasons, at about 9:45, the van left the north side of the road just west of Exit 92, went over an embankment, hit some trees and rolled on its side.
Two passengers in the vehicle ‘ Haley Simpson, 16, and Jordon Walker, 15 ‘ were airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital and Medical Center in Evansville. Simpson, of Shelbyville, Ky., was initially listed in critical condition then died from her injuries early Monday morning. Walker was listed in stable condition.
The driver, 16-year-old Kelsie Ross, and the other passengers ‘ Spenser Sutton, 16, Mat Kiser, 20, and Cory Newton, 22 ‘ were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
According to police, none of the occupants were wearing seat belts and Simpson was ejected from the vehicle when the van rolled over.
The investigating officer, Deputy Debra Young of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, said the crash is still under investigation.
