Forest Park entered the North Harrison Invitational undefeated on the young season and left the event still unblemished.
The visiting team from Ferdinand scored a perfect 75 points, winning each of the five championship matches. Crawford County won the battle for second with 33 points, followed by Salem (30), South Central (26), Corydon Central (24) and North Harrison (19).
The event was washed out because of weather the weekend before. Due to the date, usual participants Lanesville and Borden were already committed to another tournament, leaving the field at six teams.
South Central’s Matt Cox drew an opening-round bye into the semi-finals of No. 3 singles. In his semi-final match, he defeated North Harrison’s Brandon Hawkins, 6-0, 6-3. The win placed Cox into the finals, where he gave Forest Park’s Alex Altman a serious run at breaking up the Rangers’ perfect score.
After dropping the first set, 6-4, Cox gained momentum early in the second. Cox ripped off four consecutive points to take a 4-0 lead and eventually forced a third set with a 6-2 win.
The tournament played a 10-point tie-breaker in the third set of winner’s bracket rounds. For Cox, he fell behind Altman and dropped the tie-breaker, 10-4.
In the consolation of No. 3 singles, Corydon Central’s Tyler Stark dropped his first match against Altman. Stark, however, won two consecutive consolation matches to take third place. He defeated Salem’s No. 3 player, 9-7, in his final match.
All consolation matches played an eight-game pro set. Singles and doubles teams needed to win eight games with a margin of two games to advance.
South Central’s Hunter Stark also claimed a second-place finish. In his semi-final match, Stark defeated Corydon Central’s Todd Hoehn, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. In the finals, Forest Park’s Dylan Buechler got the best of Stark, 6-0, 6-0.
In No. 1 singles, Forest Park’s Nathan Bromm was the champion, dropping just eight games in three matches. South Central’s Matt Fox finished fourth.
North Harrison’s best showing came in No. 1 doubles with the team of Alec Dones and Lincoln Jones. The duo defeated South Central’s Mark O’Connor and Logan Carter in the opening match, 6-2, 6-1. They backed it up by defeating the team from Crawford County, 6-3, 6-0. Yet in the finals, the Dones-Jones team fell to Forest Park’s team of Marcus Beckman and Jake Meyer.
South Central’s O’Connor and Carter rallied to finish fourth.
