Good officials, great men

Both of Harrison County’s political parties suffered a tremendous loss when two elected officials ‘ Thomas O. Bube and William T. (Bill) Nichols ‘ recently died unexpectedly about a week apart.
Bube, a Republican who was county surveyor since 2000, died Saturday morning, June 26, a day after he was found unconscious in his office on the first floor of the Harrison County Court House. Nichols, a Democrat who held the District 2 seat on the county council, representing Franklin and Jackson townships, died Friday morning, July 2, a day after he suffered burns over about 80 percent of his body during an accident on his farm south of Lanesville.
The two men were staples of the community, with both having graduated from Harrison County high schools then serving their country in the Army. They also operated their own businesses for a number of years and were active in various organizations before turning to politics.
Another thing Bube and Nichols had in common were their commitments to their spouses, Mary and Jane, respectively, and their families.
Both men genuinely cared about their communities and Harrison County and did what they believed was in the best interests of the residents. They also were unpretentious in their positions, just regular guys whom I never heard say a mean thing about another human being. And that seems to be a rarity in the world of politics.
Now, both the Republican and Democrat Central committees will look for people to complete the terms of these two men. Bube’s term as surveyor runs through December 2012; Nichols was seeking a second term as a councilman, having won his party’s nomination in the May Primary.
It’s been several years since either political party has had to have a caucus. The last time it was under similar circumstances, with the Republicans having to fill Sheriff William (Bill) Carver’s position in October 2001 followed a few months later with the Democrats having to find Coroner Paul Cesar’s successor in early 2002.
I hope both parties are able to fill the surveyor and council positions with people whom Bube and Nichols would be proud to have as their successors. These two men deserve that.
