NH hosting 18U baseball state tourney
North Harrison will host the 18-under Babe Ruth State Tournament this weekend in Ramsey.
The high school field will host a three-team tournament, with the winner destined to move on to the Ohio Valley Regionals in Wisconsin.
North Harrison High School coach Gregg Oppel and Corydon Central High School assistant coach Kevin Burton put together a Harrison County team to compete. The team is comprised of players from North Harrison, Corydon Central and South Central schools.
‘It’s a wonderful opportunity for these kids that played against each other during the high school season, to come together and face great competition,’ Oppel said. ‘Kevin Burton organized the tournament and asked if I’d consider putting a team together, so I jumped on it.’
Play begins Friday with two games. In game one at 6 p.m., Evansville plays Lawrenceburg. The winner advances to face Harrison County at 8:30 p.m.
Action continues Saturday, when the losers from Friday night play one another at 11 a.m. The game two winner returns to face the winner of Saturday’s game at 2 p.m. If needed, an additional championship game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
‘There will be a lot of high school juniors and seniors playing, along with several that will be freshman in college next year,’ Oppel said. ‘Our guys have had a fun time practicing and getting along leading up to the games.’
