Corydon reaches final of tennis sectional


The Corydon Central girls’ tennis team reached the finals of the New Albany Sectional on Thursday by sweeping South Central, 5-0. New Albany, however, defeated Corydon Central in the final, 5-0, on Friday.
Versus South Central, the Lady Panthers scored five wins, led by Heather Uhl in No. 1 singles. Uhl defeated South Central’s Morgan Boston, 6-2, 6-1.
Fellow singles players for Corydon Central overcame slow starts to land wins. In No. 2 singles, Heidi Zimmerman won a first set tie-breaker, 7-3, to eventually top Lady Rebel Jessica Schreck, 7-6, 6-3. South Central’s Autumn Crosier won the first set against Corydon Central’s Leah Wieckowski, 6-4, in No. 3 singles. The final two sets, however, belonged to Wieckowski, 6-0, 6-0, to take the match.
On the doubles side, Taylor Kellem and Olivia Reilly defeated Emily Parker and Katie Dennison, 6-0, 7-5 in No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match was won by Corydon Central’s Megan Benton and Felicia Adamic, 6-1, 6-1, over Sydney Seelye and Hannah Pumphrey.
In Thursday’s other match, New Albany defeated Lanesville, 5-0.
The Lady Eagles put up a fight but came up short.
In No. 1 singles, Hayle Haws defeated Marta Roda Moreno, 6-2, 6-2. No. 2 singles was won by Maddy Bellew, who defeated LeAnne Myers, 6-3, 6-0. Rounding out singles action was Kaitlin Mooney defeating Jenna Bowman, 6-0, 6-0.
Lanesville, despite the loss, battled through some long points on the doubles court. Lanesville’s Rachel Riley and Jenna Walter lost to Erin Kanii and Marin Kanii, 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. No. 2 doubles was won by Shelby Wells and Chandni Bhimani, who defeated Alana Umensetter and Katie Cooke, 6-1, 7-5.
In the championship on Friday, Haws defeated Uhl in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 singles went to Bellew, defeating Zimmerman, 6-0, 6-4. Completing singles action was Mooney defeating Wieckowski, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3.
The doubles team of Erin and Marin Kanii defeated Kellem and Reilly, 6-4, 6-2. No. 2 doubles was won by Wells and Bhimani over Adamic and Benton, 7-6, 7-5.
At the Floyd Central Sectional last Wednesday, the host Lady Highlanders knocked off North Harrison, 5-0. Floyd Central eventually won the sectional.
Against Floyd Central, Olivia Boesing defeated North Harrison’s Caitlyn Janes, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 singles. In No. 2 singles, Carmen Schreiber defeated Rebekah Stephenson, and No. 3 singles went to Katherine Dauby over Allison Goldman by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
On the doubles court, Chelsey Shackelford and Whitney Batliner defeated Lady Cat duo Hannah Raake and Tine Dukes, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. No. 2 doubles was won by Jamie Wallace and Kadey Welch, who defeated North Harrison’s Morgan Weathers and Devin Whittaker, 6-0, 6-0.
