Primary Election is Tuesday
Registered voters can help determine which candidates will be on the ballot for the General Election in November by voting Tuesday in the Primary Election. Those voters in the North Harrison Community School Corp. will also select school trustees for three seats. (School trustees for Lanesville Community School Corp. also are on the ballot, but they are unopposed.)
There are 29,354 registered voters in Harrison County, and Sherry Brown, the county circuit clerk, reminds them that when they go to the polls on Tuesday, they need to bring a photo identification, such as a driver’s license, to cast their ballots.
Andy Miller, commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, said that BMV license branches will extend hours of operation Monday and Tuesday to issue state ID cards and driver’s licenses that may be used for identification at a polling place.
Full-service license branches, normally closed on Mondays and election days, will be open Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Branches will be open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
To ensure voters have immediate access to services, license branches will only process ID cards and driver’s licenses and will not perform any other BMV services these two days.
The Indiana BMV provides free, state-issued ID cards for voting purposes to any unlicensed Hoosier, as long as he or she can provide proper documentation and is old enough to vote. The following documents are required to obtain a new state ID card or driver’s license (a complete list can be found online at www.mybmv.IN.gov):
‘Proof of identity document, such as a birth certificate or passport.
‘Proof of Social Security document, such as a Social Security card, pay stub or W-2.
‘Proof of lawful status, such as a birth certificate or passport.
‘Proof of residency, two documents such as a voter registration card, utility bill or bank statement.
‘The BMV has worked with the state Election Board to provide information to local election officials about the new interim driver’s license and ID card documents issued by the BMV,’ Miller said. ‘We have also established a special Voter ID phone line on election day for election officials needing more information.’
All license branches will resume regular business hours next Wednesday.
Absentee ballots can be cast at the clerk’s office, located on the second floor of the Harrison County Court House, between now and Tuesday’s Primary Election. Hours are today (Wednesday) through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. On Saturday, the office will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and, on Monday, voters can go to the office to vote from 8 a.m. to noon.
Brown said that 296 absentee ballots have been received with another 118 mailed out but not yet returned.
