The energy inside Johnson Arena at Jeffersonville High School provided loud and exciting regional wrestling action as three members of the Corydon Central wrestling team advanced to semi-state.
Matthew LaHue, Dustin Springer and Ryan DeWitt each earned a bid to the semi-state which will be Saturday at Roberts Stadium in Evansville.
‘I think it’s a real accomplishment as short as we were on athletes this year; I’d say it’s positive to get one-fourth the team to semi-state,’ Corydon Central wrestling coach Richard Clipp said.
LaHue, wrestling at 103 pounds, was the lone Panther to reach the regional final. The sophomore rolled through his first two matches. He disposed of Washington’s Levi Graber in less than two minutes and followed that match with a 41-second pin of Mitchell’s Adam Concannon.
The championship pitted LaHue against Jeffersonville’s Alonzo Shepherd, a rematch of the Jeffersonville Sectional final. Shepherd took a 2-1 advantage after the first period. From there, the Jeffersonville light weight added six more points for an 8-1 decision over LaHue.
‘I figured on getting to the finals,’ LaHue said. ‘I wish the match was a little closer than what it was. I just didn’t wrestle my best in that match.’
LaHue said he hopes to make his first state finals by winning his first two matches at semi-state.
‘I thought we wrestled really well overall,’ Clipp said. ‘Matthew tried two different styles against Alonzo, so, hopefully, if we see him again, we can try a third.’
Sectional champion Springer finished third at regional at 125 pounds. He won his opening match by pinning Juan Ramirez of Southridge in 3:15. Springer’s semi-final opponent was a tougher opponent. Pike Central’s Derek Lunsford tangled with Springer in the semi-final and took the upper hand late in the first period by scoring a takedown. Lunsford was able to hang on to the slim lead for a 3-2 victory.
In the consolation match, Springer defeated New Albany’s Tre Marler by a decisive 10-6 decision.
‘(I) thought I did worse than the week before and could have done a lot better, but I am still happy to come in third,’ Springer said.
At 215 pounds, Corydon Central’s Ryan DeWitt scored a 6-1 victory in his opening match against Jasper’s Dan Jenkins. The win secured the junior a spot at semi-state.
In the semi-final, DeWitt lost a 9-5 decision to Pike Central’s Hunter Manning. Mitchell’s Trevor Phillips got the best of DeWitt in the consolation match, defeating him by pin in 2:28.
‘I thought that could have done better than fourth place,’ DeWitt said. ‘I just made too many mistakes my last two matches.’
Corydon Central senior Jackson Fowler also participated in the regional but lost his first-round match to North Knox’s Cody Byrer.
Semi-state will take place Saturday at Roberts Stadium, which is hosted by Evansville Reitz. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. and admission is $6. The top four place winners in each weight class advance to the state finals the following week.
